Brief Summary of Job Duties Under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Director coordinates the planning, development, direction, promotion, and evaluation of Hispanic-Serving Institution initiatives at UC Santa Barbara.
Assumes responsibility for overall development and long-term implementation and evaluation of comprehensive strategic plan for HSI effectiveness that includes participation from faculty, students, staff, and alumni.
Required Qualifications MA in Social Science, Education, Public Policy, Public Administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Exceptional communication with a diverse campus and community, including strong consultative, collaborative and team development skills; excellent presentation, public speaking and writing skills; Proactive and responsive interpersonal skills; proficient and compelling use of social media to convey impactful messaging.
Evidence of effective collaboration with multiple decentralized student-serving initiatives and the ability to articulate and expand their collective impact for Hispanic students.
Evidence of potential to work in strong collaboration with university students, faculty and staff.
Strong organizational, strategic planning, and budgeting skills Strong ability to effectively foster positive and productive relationships with campus constituencies, institutional leaders, faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, and other internal and external audiences.
Experience in analyzing data from a wide variety of sources and presenting statistical information in an appropriate, understandable format.

in Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Mathematical, Physical, or Biological Sciences, Psychology, Public Policy, etc.
Experience in higher education administration with an emphasis on student success An ability to conduct and utilize research on student success A record of securing external funding for research or programmatic innovation Evidence of effective collaboration with multiple decentralized student-serving initiatives and the ability to articulate and expand their collective impact for Hispanic students.
Experience in analyzing data from a wide variety of sources and presenting statistical information in an appropriate, understandable format.
Experience in organizational psychology and entrepreneurship, or a related area.
Special Conditions of Employment Satisfactory conviction history background check UCSB is a Tobacco-Free environment Job Functions and Percentages of Time: Planning, Development, and Evaluation of HSI Initiatives - 15% Coordinates the planning, development, direction, promotion, execution and evaluation of Hispanic-Serving Institution initiatives at UC Santa Barbara.
Assumes responsibility for the overall development and long-term implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive strategic plan for HSI effectiveness that includes participation from faculty, students, staff, and alumni.
Advises the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion regarding foundational and cutting edge Hispanic Serving Institution best practices, scholarly research, and institutional strategies and represents the VC for DEI on committees, forums, lectures, and task forces across the UC system, including serving on the UC-HSI Advisory Board as a campus representative to advance institutional capacity related to Hispanic “servingness” at UCSB.
Serve as a Hispanic cultural ambassador for the VC of DEI in campus committees and units, such as AD&A museum, Arts & Lectures, and Facilities Management that are responsible for cultural knowledge and “feel” of the campus, to encourage the utilization and dissemination of Hispanic aesthetic and cultural traditions throughout the visual landscape of the campus.
Work with the DEI data analyst to develop evaluation tools to be used to monitor and gauge the effectiveness of campus policies to advance the instruction, mentoring, recruitment, retention, K-16 outreach, and cultural well-being of Hispanic staff, students and faculty at UCSB and provide yearly reports on such evaluation to the VC of DEI every June.
Work collaboratively with evaluators and Institutional Research staff to develop metrics for assessing and improving the effectiveness of multiple intersecting HSI initiatives, employing quantitative and qualitative methods and data.
Lead Collaboration Across Academic Units - 15% Leads collaboration across academic units—departments, divisions, centers—and especially with the Faculty Equity Advisors, DEI Diversity Officers, the Graduate Division, and the Center for Innovative Teaching, Research and Learning to develop culturally sustaining academic policies, pedagogies, instructional methodologies and mentoring to increase graduation rates and feelings of belongingness of Hispanic/Latine students in the majors and minors of their choice at UCSB.
Collaborate with the Graduate Division on supporting the Hispanic graduate pipeline and providing Hispanic graduate students with the tools they need to obtain advanced degrees at UCSB and acquire skills they need for postgraduate careers.
\ Staff Support - 10% Collaborates with UCSB Hispanic (Chicanx/Latinx) staff across campus (in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs) to support, serve, and affirm their efforts, particularly with respect to their persistent and timely efforts with first-generation Hispanic students.
Networking and Resource Serving - 20% Works with Student Affairs on undergraduate student initiatives, some based out of the DEI Office.
Serves as a resource for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff to conduct research through scholarships, internships, fellowships, mentoring, trainings, and grant-supported services.
Networks across various entities in Student Affairs (Office of Admissions, EOP, Promise Scholars, etc.
) to develop and run programs for UCSB undergraduates and graduates that culturally affirms them and provides them tools to succeed at UCSB.
Support alumni engagement and donor development efforts (particularly with Chicanx/Latinx alumni) relative to HSI efforts as needed.
Mentoring and Training - 20% Mentors and trains faculty, staff, and students in best practices, culturally-sensitive strategies, and affirming practices of engagement when serving the needs of Hispanic/Latine students to enhance not only their academic success, but also their sense of well-being, embrace and “at homeness” at UCSB.
Supporting and Evaluating HSI Grants - 10% Collaborates with the Special Assistant to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Diversity Initiatives to envision, develop, and implement HSI grants at the state and federal level, and monitors how successful such grants are in creating research and mentoring opportunities for Hispanic/Latine undergraduate and graduate students.
Serve as a content expert for grant development efforts as needed.
Collaborate actively with Hispanic (Chicanx/Latinx) faculty to support their career trajectory and apply for and obtain HSI-related grants.
Also work closely with campus officials to recruit, retain, and create a sense of belonging among new Chicanx/Latinx faculty across campus.
Decision Making - 10% Represents the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with internal and external decision makers and partners with regard to UCSB’s Hispanic Serving mission and programming.
